Overanalyzing Anime

Last night, Marvel Entertainment uploaded a humorous video regarding the whereabouts of Ant-Man and the Wasp during the events of Infinity War, informing viewers that a new trailer would provide us with that coveted information today. While they did deliver on their promise of a new trailer, it didn't exactly do much in regard to explaining where the two heroes were during the events of Infinity War.
Where Were Ant-Man and the Wasp?
While I'm not going to discuss Infinity War at length, I will still be touching on some key plot points that some may deem spoiler-ish, so, just a heads up before you continue reading.
Still here? Well, let's go.
So, let's start by dissecting the trailer for a moment. To begin, the trailer itself doesn't really serve to distinguish whether or not this story takes place before or after Infinity War. I would assume that it takes place before, simply because the entire cast is present - and, you know, not turned to dust. I would imagine that if this was in a post-snap world, we would see that some of the characters might be missing. I imagine that, in this movie, the duo will find themselves stuck in the Quantum realm (which was mentioned in the trailer) during the events of Infinity War, and as a result of temporal shielding (or some other fancy sci-fi lingo), will have been unaffected by it and ready to fight come Avengers 4. But, I'm just spitballing.
However, it could very well take place after Infinity War. The only real issue with that theory is the fact that Scott and Hope are suiting up after they - or at least he - had chosen to go against the Sokovia Accords. I was under the impression that both Scott and Clint (Hawkeye) had chosen to opt out of the super-heroics in lieu of being with their families. So, if that is the case, then perhaps, in a post-snap world, the Sokovia Accords have been lifted in order to allow the remaining heroes to protect people, unhindered by the need of government approval.
Again, both of these are just theories. I, for one, think it takes place before but, I could definitely see the latter being a viable option. I suppose we'll find out on July 6th.
Moving away from it's connections to Infinity War, I want to say that this movie looks like it'll be a lot of fun, which sounds like a good direction to go following the emotionally draining Infinity War. It seems that this time around we'll see Ant-Man really step into his role as a hero, as opposed to just being a thief. Yes, there seems to be elements of a heist in this movie, but it seems more like Scott is legitimately trying to use the Ant-Man suit to fight crime and be a role model for his daughter, which is awesome. Of all the MCU heroes, he's the only one with a family we've gotten the chance to really get to know, and I really like the way that sets him movie apart from others.
It's also nice to see another female antagonist. While I knew that Ghost was a woman, it was nice finally having an understanding of who she is and what she's after. The first trailer chose not to focus on her at all - only giving us a brief glimpse of her costume - but this trailer turned it around and focused heavily on her, as well as her intriguing powers. As I'm wholly unfamiliar with her character, I'm interested to see what kind of villain she is. The trailer makes it seem as though she may not be in control of her powers, and that she might even be afraid of what she's doing. I am aware that she stole the costume, but that doesn't necessarily mean she's evil - I mean, Scott stole Hank's costume in the first movie and he turned out alright.. right?
I also liked seeing DCEU-alum Lawrence Fishburne in this movie. I like him in pretty much everything he's in - even his small roles in Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. I'm excited to see him take on the role of an older Goliath. Not only that, I really want to see how Michelle Pfiefer handles her role as Hope's mother, as I really loved her work in Murder on the Orient Express.
What were your thoughts on the trailer? Did it pique your interest? Are you excited about it? Or are still reeling from Infinity War to even deal with the thought of another MCU movie? Let us know in the comments! And, if by chance you haven't seen the trailer, here it is below. And look for Ant-Man and the Wasp when they hit theaters July 6th!
