Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

Yesterday evening I have the pleasure of doing something rare - watching a movie I knew absolutely nothing about. Yes, the title does give away a pretty substantial point but, aside from that, I went into this film without any prior knowledge of its plot.
I’ll start by saying this.. it did not disappoint. With a slew of familiar faces - some well established, others still relatively new to the industry - I was immediately intrigued to see how their characters and performances would pan out. I have been a fan of Branagh ever since high school, with his all too convincing performance as the conniving, backstabbing Iago; so seeing him take the lead as the main protagonist protagonist was a welcoming start.
While the first to acts are good in terms of providing necessary exposition and in giving some of the characters moments to really show off their acting chops - Branagh in particular - it’s really the final acting makes entire film worthwhile. I want to give additional praise to Pfeiffer’s Performance, Which I thought was particularly compelling in one of the final scenes; however than ensemble, as a whole, really shines throughout the final act as everything comes to a close.
I will also add that the “sacrifice” our protagonist chose to make in the end was particularly moving because, for the entirety of the film, he spoke of the world any certain regard. However, after this “disturbing” event he was forced to rethink how the should ultimately deal with it. The “balance” he speaks of throughout the story is pivotal to who he is as a person, which is why in leaving this situation “unbalanced,” we as the audience can really understand just how big a sacrifice he’s making for them; perhaps even more so than they realize.
Also, while I know it's not a film that will garner any sort of Oscar attention, I can't hep but feel that it deserves some sort of award - at the ver least something in the make up departments because I couldn't help but be enthralled with Branagh's magnificently mustachioed face.
I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about this film. All in all, with the intriguing story, stellar cast, and amazing performances, I can’t help but give the film praise for what it managed to accomplish. So, for those of you who are looking for a decent drama, then hop aboard the Orient-Express; it’ll be a trip you won’t soon forget!
