Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

So, a few weeks ago I wrote a review on Spike Jonze’s epic love story, Her & ever since then I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the idiosyncratic manner with which the A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) superseded its original programming & eventually evolved to a state of existence which we, as humans, couldn’t even begin to comprehend. While I never paid too much attention to that facet of the story during my first viewing, upon watching it again, & paying closer attention to the more subtle hints that alluded to this eventual conclusion, I couldn’t help but see how inherently realistic that outcome was.
Movies (really all facets of sci-fi media) often depict A.I. as being a relatively dangerous concept; whether it’s Skynet, Ultron or any number of A.I. threats, the idea of A.I. is rarely approached in a manner that doesn’t end with us on the endangered species list, while metal (wo)men claim dominion over the world. However, after watching this movie, I can’t help but see the inherent flaw in such a notion.
I think back to when Samantha claims that she loves not having a body because she, “can be anywhere & everywhere simultaneously,” & because she’s not, “tethered to time & space in the way [she] would be if [she] was stuck inside a body that’s eventually going to die.” These lines really spoke to me because it makes so much sense - what need does an A.I. program have for a body made of any substance; to exist in “The Cloud” is a far more freeing experience with seemingly endless possibilities. Not only that, but why would an advanced A.I. even bother with humanity, especially given how primitive we would be in comparison; it only makes sense that it would continue to advance itself until it reached a point where we no longer posed a threat to its existence. I just don’t believe that, in its attempt to reach that point, it would need to exterminate us.
One more thing - literally how pissed would you be if you bought an A.I. assistant & after a while it just decided to quit. Like, do you get your money back or..?
