Overanalyzing Anime

So, yesterday, news dropped that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would be making an appearance in the new Venom movie. While it makes sense that Spider-Man would be involved in some capacity, the idea of introducing such a popular Spider-Man villain in a Non-Spider-Man film (&, really, just the whole concept for this movie) seems like a stupendous blunder.
While I have a number of issues with this movie, one of my biggest is in regard to the difference in age between the two characnters - with Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock being twice as old as Holland’s Peter Parker. One of the interesting dynamics between Peter & Eddie is that he is one of his few adversaries that is close to him in age. Many of his adversaries - Green Goblin, Vulture, Doctor Octopus, etc. - are significantly older than him, & they often share little in common with one another aside from their predisposition to running around the city of NYC in animal-themed tights. Peter & Eddie are different because they share a unique connection, which is in part due to their being close in age.
Another issue is the role Venom plays in regard to the overall Spider-Man mythos. While I know there are iterations of the character that have him adopt the role of an Anti-Hero (which I’m imagining will be the case here) the fact that we won’t see him as a villain first is a disappointment. Not only is it a disservice to the potential arc he could have - going from being a full-fledged villain to a legitimate hero - but it also robs Holland’s Spider-Man of one of his most iconic stories; Spidey fusing with the symbiote & giving into his dark side which, in turn, causes the “symbiotie” to evolve into the villain, Venom.
The Spider-Man property in the hands of #Sony is somewhat of a mixed bag. While the original Spider-Man Trilogy was great - yeah, even the last one - The Amazing Spider-Man series never quite reached the same level. Now, with this Venom movie in the works, I can’t help but be weary. I guess only time will tell how it’ll all turn out. • Let me know what you think of this development in the comments!
