Overanalyzing Anime

Cast out from the only home they’ve ever known, a family is forced to start a new life within the depths of the forest; however, they soon realize the forest holds dangers far beyond anything they’ve ever encountered before in this gripping New England folktale, set in the 17th Century.
When I first saw this film I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Having seen no trailers and read no reviews, I simply saw the title of the movie and thought it would be a frightfully fun time - something akin to Insidious or The Conjuring. What I witnessed, however, was something far more surreal.
It’s honestly difficult to focus on just one aspect of this film because so much of it is so great. The story is enthralling, the characters relatable, & the elements of horror are genuinely terrifying. I suppose the two things I admire most about the film are the characters & the dialogue.
I’ll start with the relatability of the characters, which was a surprise to me - especially given the fact that this is set four centuries ago. The familial elements in regard to the discord between the parents; the eldest daughter who, on the cusp of adulthood, seeks freedom & independence; the younger brother, his body riddled with hormones, who is trying to deal with confusing emotions while also trying to prove himself to his family; & the twins who, in their constant need for validation & attention, behave very mischievously. It’s all so surprisingly relatable, which really caught me off guard.
I also really admired the fact that the language was not altered as to appease general audiences. The language, as difficult as it was to understand at times, made the experience all the more realistic. Much like CGI can make a futuristic city seem believable, the language used in this film made me feel as though I had been transported to that era. I really respect Writer/Director Robert Eggers for this creative choice.
The Witch is an incredible story that reels you in from the start and doesn’t let go until the very end. I highly recommend it for fans of genuine horror films.
