Overanalyzing Anime

High School sucks. Like, really sucks. Especially when your father is gone, your overbearing mother never has anything nice to say about you, the guy you like doesn’t even notice you, & your older brother, who already gets everything he wants already, starts hooking up with your best friend. Like I said.. high school sucks.
There are many reasons to like The Edge of Seventeen - the cast, the story, the laughs, the drama - but my main reason for loving it is because of the over whelming sense of nostalgia I had in watching her behave like.. well, a teenager. Ah, to be young - when the most trivial of things would (quite literally) seem like the end of the world
I also really liked how all of the characters were handled. While the movie focused on Hailee Steinfield's character, Nadine, it managed to still make the side characters of the #story very compelling. For example, the interactions with Woody Harelson's, Mr. Bruner could have been confined to the classroom scene that was shown in the trailer, but instead the film chose to give his character more depth in a number of ways.
I also want to say that the #comedy in this film is really exceptional. I feel like it’s relatively simple to create a drama about #teens in high school - Degrassi has been doing it for decades now - but, to inject elements of comedy that will have both younger & older audiences LOL’ing.. well, that’s takes talent. Definite props to writer Kelly Fremon Craig for the script.
The more sincere moments between characters were also very well written & genuinely moving. One example happens near the end of the film; when the tension between Nadine & her brother finally reaches its breaking point, & they speak openly about how they feel about one another. It’s a excellent scene wherein both Stienfiled & Jenner really manage to convince me of their complicated sibling relationship.
All in all, whether it be from the abundance of #laughs or the truly emotional moments between the characters, The Edge of Seventeen is a movie that’ll have you in tears by then time the credits are rolling.
My rating 9/10
