Overanalyzing Anime

It goes without saying that “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year; not only will it be the first MCU to follow this years “Avengers: Endgame” - which is sure to be a game changer, in and of itself - it will also bears the onus of presenting us with what’s yet to come in the MCU now that the overarching threat of Thanos has been dealt with. It’s actually kind of fitting that the superhero to start the MCU was Iron Man, and now his “ward” has picked up the mantle as the man who will lead us into a new era of Marvel films. But, with that being said, with great hype comes great responsibility - does the Spider-Man sequel have what it takes to usher in a grand new era for the MCU? Well, going solely by this trailer I would say, no.
Don’t get me wrong, it was a fine trailer in the sense that it didn’t give too much, but still served to get people excited about the next installment in the franchise. However, the information that it did provide didn’t really do much to get me, personally, excited about this movie at all. It showed a lot of cool stuff - the elementals, Mysterio - but it felt very crowded, and we all know how dangerous a Spider-Man movie bloated with super-villains can be, but more on that later.
I’m also not a fan of the fact that the story will be taking place overseas. With this taking place immediately following the events of “Endgame,” I would like to see how the people of New York - a constant staple of massive MCU events - are handling the fallout. But, maybe that’s asking too much. This trailer is meant to promote Spider-Man, not spoil the ending of “Endgame,” and I can respect that. Hell, even the trailer for “Endgame” does very little to spoil any crucial elements of the movie. But, even still, the lack of information surrounding the fallout of that movie is exactly why I believe releasing this trailer was a mistake. The last time I saw Spider-Man he was turning to ash, and now he’s on a vacation with his classmates. While it’s obvious that he, and the other victims of the Snap, will return, it doesn’t change the fact that in not knowing how that happens, this trailer feels somewhat off.
Even if ignore that fact and take it at face value, it doesn’t change the fact that this movie seems like it’s trying to do a lot. Not only do we have a budding romance between MJ and Peter in the works, but we also have a gaggle of new villains thrown in the mix alongside a surprise appearance from the leader of SHIELD. Oh, and then Happy’s trying to hook up with Aunt May too.. weird (but in a good way.) That’s not even mentioning “Endgame” - which also has to be a part of this story in some way, shape, or form. It’s just a lot, ya know?
But, enough of what I didn’t like, let’s take a second to discuss the things I did like. The one aspect of this trailer that really stood out to me was the direction they’ve taken the character of Mysterio in. While I do not believe for one second that he is going to be a hero in this movie, it is interesting to see that he’s being portrayed in such a way. Furthermore, with Mysterio being a master of special effects, I do wonder if the elementals exist at all - and aren’t, instead, his own creations. That would be an interesting way to go about introducing those characters - though there is always the risk of something like that backfiring, like with “Iron Man 3.”
All in all, while it doesn’t have me all they hyped for the movie, I’m still curious to see just how things turn out for Peter and the gang in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” in theaters July 5th. Check out the trailer again below!
