Overanalyzing Anime

Awoken ninety years early from their cryogenic slumber due to a system malfunction, two passengers upon a luxury-class star-ship must find a way to come to terms with their new reality.
I’ll start by saying that Passengers is a really good movie. While one might expect a lot of my praise to be geared towards the Sci-Fi aspects of the movie, I was actually much more impressed with the way the characters & story were handled. A lot of high-budget films focus too much on the spectacle &, as a result, the characters and story fall to the wayside. Passengers doesn’t have this problem. With only a couple of characters alone on the star-ship, we have no choice but to get to know the two of them on a very intimate & personal level. It also doesn’t hurt that the on-screen chemistry between Chris Pratt & Jennifer Lawrence is impeccable - they really managed to make me not only believe in, but root for their relationship.
Spoilers follow.
So let’s discuss the Elephant in the room, which is the fact that Jim (Pratt) forced Aurora (Lawerence) into their situation. “In bird culture this is considered a dick move.” But, even though it was a bad decision, it was one that I, as a member of the audience, could *relate* to. The man had been alone for over a year, so deep into his depression that he was ready to kill himself & then.. there *she* was. She presented him with this incredible opportunity to have something to live for agian. By “taking” her life, she saved his.
This is the part where I start to take issue with this film. While it does deal with the fallout of her eventually finding out, it is almost immediately replaced by a very sudden outside threat. I would have preferred keeping the focus on the characters and the fallout of her realizing what he did. But, alas, this is Hollywood. Nevertheless, the action sequences were still a lot of fun.
While I could have gone without the blockbuster-esque ending, Passengers is still definitley worth watching. With it’s incredible characters and intimate story, it’s a journey (through the stars) that you’ll want to take!
My rating 9/10
