Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

Mother! tells the story of a well renown poet & his young wife who have (seemingly) just moved into his old childhood home. Not soon after, mysterious visitors begin arriving &, while her husband is comfortable with their presence, the “mother” is unsettled by their sudden appearance.
I’ll start off by saying my synopsis of this film really doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of what this film is about - even having seen it & read (numerous) reviews/theories on it, I still don’t really know exactly what it’s about. While many reviewers heralded it as “profound” & “thought provoking,” I can’t be sure if I agree.
Now, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s a bad film - the effort put into the screenplay alone is worthy of praise. Screenplay Writer/Director Darren Aronofsky is known for his unique scripts, & this project is no exception. That being said, while I’m all for the idea of films being unique, this film is.. well a different kind of beast all together.
I’m not against allegories & metaphors but this film has so much going on that it seems impossible to understand it all, & I just don’t see the point of creating a film like that. Because, even now, I don’t know what in the fu.. erm, I mean what in the world happened there. Some say it has to do with religion, others goobal warning - I, for a while, even thought it dealt with sexual assault. But I just don’t feel like anyone can be sure. It’s as the ‘Poet’ claims, “it effects everyone in a different way.” And, for the life of me, I don’t know if that makes it especially remarkable or especially ridiculous.
All in all, this is the first time I’ve written a review & have just been fundamentally confused about how to approach rating it. On one hand, I feel that the Aronofsky was doing too much - but on the other I’m impressed that he could create something so unique & original. It feels weird to penalize him for my inability to appreciate whatever it was he was trying to do. So, yeah. I guess my recommendation is watch it. Just watch it & try to figure it out for yourself.
My rating: 7.5/10
