Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

For this comic, I’m writing two reviews – one for those who have played the game and/or are familiar with the story & want to read my thoughts on what occurred with the first year of the story, & another (this one) for those who are unfamiliar with the world of Injustice & would rather not have any aspect of the story spoiled for them.
The world of Injustice originates from the video game of the same name, with this comic acting as a prequel, explaining the events that occurred five years prior to the events in the game. In this version of Earth, The Joker sets in motion a string of “jokes” that results in a catastrophic event that completely tears apart the (metaphorical) fabric of this DC Universe. Characters we’ve seen as friends for years will become enemies; heroes & villains will die; the lines between what is right & what is wrong will become blurred as you struggle to come to grips with certain characters’ choices. While good & bad are often depicted as black & white social constructs in comics, Injustice invites us to a world where every action is tinged in grey. Injustice: Year One is the type of story that will reel you in from the very first page (seriously) & have you clamoring for more when you reach the last.
Moving past Year One the stakes continue to rise until, & at the end of Year Five it crescendos into an explosive finale that sets the stage for what is a thrilling video game. While the later years may have some lulls it’s still well worth the five-year trip to see just how bad it gets for the heroes & villains of the DCU.
I promised not to get into spoiler territory with this review so, for now, I’m going to leave it at that. I’ll add that if you haven’t read DC’s Injustice series you are doing yourself a disservice. With the story completed & with 166 chapters to push through, you’ll have hours worth of material to read & enjoy. If you’re a fan of DC comics & want to see your favorite characters in situations unlike anything you’ve probably ever seen before, then the Injustice series is definitely for you.
My rating (for Year One): 10/10
