Overanalyzing Anime

With three of the longest years in their history behind them, one might think that the characters of this DCU might be allotted a moment to catch their breath.. but rest & relaxation are foreign concepts to these heroes/villains. The fourth year of Injustice ups the ante yet again by bringing the Gods (both Old and New) into the fold, as a new battle for Earth begins with the Gods of Old wishing to dispose of the newly appointed “Gods” (the Justice League) and reclaim their status amongst humanity.
While this year was filled with many exciting moments - the Wonder Woman v. Superman fight, the JLA vs. Old Gods brawl, Batman’s reunion with Robin, and the callback to Kalibak’s death from Year One - there were also moments I could have done without such as the opening fight sequence with Montoya & much of the Harley Quinn/Billy Batson/Hippolyta scenes. I also feel that the Oracle/Batgirl storyline was only a part of the story to explain her being in the video game as a DLC. It’s not to say that these aspects of the story were bad, it’s just that they didn’t do much for me in terms of being as necessary to the plot.
What I will say about the fourth year of Injustice is that it ended with what was, in my option, the best cliffhanger of all five years. While that cliffhanger ultimately didn’t turn out to be what I wanted it to be (more on that later) it still had me pumped for the next year more so than any of the other final chapters.
I want to add that one of the most interesting scenes came from the interaction between the New Gods and the Old Gods, and that didn’t come about until the very end. I would have liked to see more interaction between Zeus and High Father, as (before this) I had never seen the the New Gods and the Old Gods interact in such a way.
All in all, this year was good, but I didn’t find it as great as years past. But, to it’s credit, there’s only so much they had left to work with going into their fourth year, and for that I can’t help but give them somewhat of a reprieve. My rating: 8/10
