Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

Her tells the story of Theodore Twombly; a lonely man who, after his wife files for divorce, turns to his artificially intelligent (AI) assistant for companionship.
If you’re thinking the concept of this film sounds ridiculous, you wouldn’t be alone. In all honesty, it is ridiculous - but, really, what love story isn’t? What I appreciate about this particular brand of ridiculousness is that it fully commits to its narrative &, as a result, presents audiences with an incredible story filled with all the awkward, comedic, emotional, & sorrowful moments that comes from being in a relationship.
I’ve mentioned before that romance movies aren’t really my thing, & I stand by that - however there are exceptions to that standard. I do appreciate realistic romance movies. I know this may seem strange, seeing as this particular story is not what most would deem “realistic.” I’ll admit, while this story is definitely fictional, (for now) the way in which the story unfolds is very much realistic.
For example, the relationship builds slowly, without him - and perhaps, also, her - even realizing that their relationship is evolving. It’s done so gradually & naturally - with all the little (& big) awkward moments one might expect to occur when a man is falling in love with an AI. That realism is further amplified as the film enters its final, dramatic act. While I don’t want to delve too deeply & spoil the ending, I will say that the story is as beautiful as it is tragic.
I guess another aspect that makes me like this film so much is that I feel as though I can relate to & understand the main character. Films wherein beautiful people deal with superficial problems & eventually end up together are so passé. This is a love story wherein I can relate to the protagonist because, like him, I too am an awkward, introvert. In fact, just last night, a friend & I joked about how this could’ve easily been a story about me.
There’s a lot more that I can say about this film, but that’s all for now. Her really is an incredible tale of love & loss - I highly recommend it.
My rating 10/10
