In the third Issue of "Doomsday Clock" the story diverges into several subplots - a reunion, a meeting of masks, an evening on the town, & a movie night - each of which will, likely, have significant ramifications on the future of the story.
Let’s start first with the reunion between The Comedian & Ozymandias. This issue gives us an explanation as to “how” Blake ended up in this universe, however the “why” is still a mystery. What was great about this part was that we got our first legitimate fight between two “heroes.” Up until this point D-Clock has focused on dialogue & exposition (which is *not* a bad thing), but witnessing this rematch was a treat.
At the meeting of masks, we see the outcome of Rorschach’s meeting with Batman. This aspect of the story was interesting because of how Batman dealt with Rorschach. One might of thought that the two would have had a brawl of their own; but, instead, Batman listened to Rorschach - even going so far as to offer him a room in his mansion while he read Kovacs’ journal. I have to admit that when Batman said that the energy signature was coming from Arkham Asylum I didn’t even consider the fact that he might put Rorschach in there. Though, I can definitely understand why he did it; multiverse crisis aside, Reggie has some serious psychological issues - we can thank Adrian’s beast for that.
The evening on the town with Mime & Marionette was an opportunity to showcase Mime’s abilities - has he *really* been holding those weapons this whole time? - & open the door for an eventual appearance from the Clown Prince of Crime.
And then there’s the ambiguous aspect of the movie night at - what I assume - is a retirement home. Who is Mr. Thunder? And, also, what is the deeper meaning of the Nathaniel Dusk film? Perhaps it’s Geoff John’s attempt at a “Tales of the Black Freighter?” And, if so, how does it tie into the future of D-Clock.
Geoff Johns & Gary Frank do it again with another beautiful, thrilling entry in the Doomsday Clock series. I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here!
