Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

One thing I feel both the DCEU & MCU do well are their characters. I know this may not be a shared sentiment, and I feel like I have an understanding as of why. I'm going to start this one off with the DCEU - not to chastise it this time, but to sympathize. Unlike the MCU, the DCEU has been highly scrutinized. I've noticed that the DCEU receives a substantial amount of unwarranted criticism for how their characters are portrayed, & I imagine that this may be due to the fact that their characters are significantly more well-known than those of the MCU.
The adults watching these films were groomed to expect a certain kind of League; older animated series like the Superfriends & Justice League, indoctrinated us into comicbook lore when we were young, & seeing our favorite characters depicted as something different than what we're used to ultimately plays a role in how positively, or negatively, we receive them.
The MCU characters, on the other hand, are relatively new in terms of widespread, mainstream appeal; this allows writers to take certain creative liberties without fear of being overly chastised or critiqued. How many people do you think knew about the Mandarin before Ironman 3? Not enough to have the big twist of the film be criticized as much as it probably could’ve been. But Superman killing one person to save the lives of many - now that caused an uproar.
As an added note, I want to give credit to DCEU for being able to retain their actors. I can't tell you how much it annoys me that Edward Norton was replaced with Mark Rufallo (almost as much as the Terrence Howard/Don Chedle switcheroo.) It's nothing against Mark, but I felt Edward really embodied the essence of the “out of place” doctor that Bruce Banner is. I give kudos to the DCEU for keeping it consistent, well, at least for now, anyway – only time will tell how much longer Batfleck will be around.
