Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

In this five part series I want to focus on the differences between the DCEU & MCU in regard to how their respective cinematic universes are handled in regard to HISTORY, STAKES, CHARACTERS, SCALE, and VISION. I’m going to start with the HISTORY of both worlds (or rather universes) to see how their histories have an affect on how audiences perceive their worlds. This discussion will be confined to Phase 1 of the MCU and the five films that currently exist within the DCEU.
Spoiler warning.
I’m going to start with the DCEU, & their rather convoluted history. One of my main issues with the scene depicted in the photo above is the fact that it showed Men, Aliens & the Old Gods all fighting with one another against an Alien/New Gods threat. This is a point of contention for me because it forces me to ask the question, “what version of Earth is this?” Because, by the history of this world, men come from the Old Gods. Hippolyta literally says, “Zeus created beings over which the Gods would rule.” My issue with this is, if this is the case, why is it that man has no recollection of fighting with them? Of being their progeny? Even more so than that, why is Superman such a mystery to the people of Earth when their ancestors literally fought with the alien Green Lantern Corps.. & fought against an alien, Steppenwolf, & his Parademon army? If this is *our* Earth, why do we have so many religions, when it’s clear that only one (Hellenism) is the truth?
What I prefer about the MCU is that it doesn’t dabble in wars fought thousands of years in the past (at least not yet, anyway.) As of now, the farthest we’ve gone back is WWII when Captain America fought against the Nazi faction, Hydra. The reason this works better than showing us massive battles from the past is that it doesn’t open the door for unnecessary questions like the ones I now have regarding the DCEU’s history. The history of the MCU is linear (aside from CA:TFA which is presented out of the established “order” of the films.) When flashbacks are used, they’re used sparingly and serve to answer questions, instead of creating more. In this regard, the MCU has an easily defined history, as opposed to the DCEU’s which is just.. messy.
