Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

Immediately following the events of Secret Invasion, Dark Avengers presents us with a world wherein Norman Osborn has absolute control. As the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. - now H.A.M.M.E.R. - he has assembled a new Avengers team composed of some of the most dangerous supervillains in the Marvel Universe.
Of all the stories I’ve read from Marvel, this has to be one of the most unique. The idea of taking super villains & masquerading then as heroes is such an interesting approach, & its one that plays out brilliantly. The volatile nature of these (very) different individuals leads to an abundance of confrontations, many of which quickly turn deadly.
Another interesting aspect of the story is the way it handles Osborn’s character. While I’ve enjoyed his alter ego, the Green Goblin, for years, I’ve never really found Osborn all that compelling. This story changes that; free from being in the shadow of Spider-Man, we get to see him fleshed our in a way that’s highly entertaining for the audience. Seeing him lead his Avengers as the Iron Patriot is an absolute treat - especially as he struggles to keep his “Mr. Hyde” at bay.
Moving away from character relationships, I have to say that I really enjoyed the plot. Author Brian Michael Bendis always does an excellent job with telling stories, & the first volume of Dark Avengers is no exception. In addition to that, the artwork is incredible. I really like the fact that artist Mike Deodato pulls from real people for his character designs. For example, Norman Osborn bares a striking resemblance to Tommy Lee Jones.
Two more things, 1.) I just realized this is my first Marvel Comics post on this page, which really surprised me. I’m going to try to post more about Marvel comics in the future! And 2.) the real Doom PhD (Doctor Doom) makes an appearance, & that always warrants acknowledgment.
The first volume of Dark Avengers is an awesome entry in the Dark Reign arc; the story is fun, the artwork great, & the characters are incredibly entertaining. Check it out!
