I cant help but applaud Black Mirror for its ability to take scientific & technological concepts that, on the surface, seem very exciting, & showing us the inevitable dangers that coincide with it existing in the real world. This story is especially disturbing when you realize the implications it has, not only on the victims, but the perpetrator as well. This episode - as with many in the Black Mirror series - really forces the audience to think about the implications that are associated with certain kinds of technology & whether or not they should exist in the first place.
Aside from the darker aspects of the story, I have to say that I genuinely enjoyed the moments wherein they paid homage to other science fiction shows/movies. I really liked the fact that this episode was basically a parody of the older Star Trek series, & - in the updated scenes - mimicked the ever-unique style J.J. Abrams used in his recent reboot of the series. Not only that, but the comedic aspects of the story worked very well - & were also very much needed in the face of such a twisted plot.
The production for this episode was very impressive. Both the physical sets & the CGI were spot on throughout - whether it was the CGI exterior of the ship, the practical set used for the Bridge, or the mixture of CGI & practical sets that were used for the alien worlds. Netflix really does an excellent job of blurring the lines between the cinematic quality of #film & #television.
All in all, Black Mirror does it again with their season opener as it blends together all manner of Sci-Fi topics into an especially dark, thrilling hour of entertainment.
