Overanalyzing Anime

In this episode we see Jefferson Pierce struggle with an identity crisis; while he wants to give up the mantle of Black Lightning so that he can be with his ex-wife, he‘s beginning to understand that “Principal Pierce” can’t solve all of the issues that exist in his community alone.
I really like how this show doesn’t hold back on the reality of certain situations. For example, how Lawanda’s daughter - a girl from, what seems to be, a good family - ended up becoming involved with the wrong people after her father died &, as a result, became a prostitute. It’s a really harrowing tale, & it manages to get worse because, when Lawanda tries to save her daughter, she ends up getting murdered; an unceremonious death outside of a run-down motel. It’s not only sad, it’s real.
That realism also ties into the end of the episode because, in reality, a smart villain isn’t just going to keep giving their henchmen numerous chances. While Lala seemed like a mainstay for the series, I’m glad they went the realistic route & dispatched him for his acting so recklessly.
The only aspect of this show that I find tedious is the romantic aspect. I understand his ex-wife’s hesitation in wanting to reconcile - especially given the fact that she’s seen just how bad it can get - but, at the same time, there are women who manage to deal with husbands who join the military or the police force; her not being able to handle this makes her appear weak, & I don’t really like that because she’s depicted as being a strong, brilliant woman. I understand the need for drama, I just wish that *this* wasn’t the focal point of it.
One more thing. I’m really glad that they provided a reason for why people can’t recognize him. I thought it strange that no one - not even his daughters - noticed it was him in the mask. In this episode his youngest daughter provided a reason - claiming that looking at his face is, “like looking into a spotlight or something. It’s out of focus.”
All in all, this was another great episode & I hope they continue to keep the momentum going.
My rating 8/10.
