Overanalyzing Anime
Blog Owner & Lead Writer

So, over the last few days Bandai/Namco has revealed a number of new “Dragon Ball” projects that are set for release this year. While some of these projects expand upon existing content - such as the highly anticipated second season of “Fighterz” for their “Dragon Ball” game of the same name - others are entirely new entities, which come in the form of two brand new games - “Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission” and “Dragon Ball: Project Z.” In short, its a damn good time to be a “Dragon Ball” fan.
“Dragon Ball Fighterz”
To kick things off, lets discuss the all new “Fighterz” joining the brawl - Jiren and Videl. Having never seen “Dragon Ball: Super” (aside from the “Broly” movie) I am not too familiar with Jiren; what I do know about him is that he is, undoubtedly, the strongest foe Goku and company have faced in the “Dragon Ball” multiverse, which has me pretty excited to try him out. The trailer definitely had me pumped, as we got to see him pummel Super Saiyan Blue Goku with a slew of devastatingly powerful attacks. His power looks even more terrifying when compared to the other new DLC character, Videl, who, while interesting, does not have me anywhere near as excited as Jiren. I will say that Videl seems as though she will have a unique fighting style, especially with the addition of the Great Saiyan as her built-in support character. She may end up being one to watch out for.
In addition to that, the reveal of the new Broly and Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta from this years movie has me “Super” pumped for what’s yet to come during this second season of new characters. While we may not be getting eight characters as we did with the first season, the four that have been announced so far - as well as the two mystery characters yet to be revealed m - have me excited for what I am sure will be excellent m additions to the game! Be sure to look out for the first two characters this Thursday, January 31st!
Dragon Ball FighterZ - PS4/XB1/PC/SWITCH - New Season Begins (FighterZ Pass 2 and New World Tour)
“Super Dragon Ball Heroes: World Mission”
So, when I first saw the trailer for this game a week ago I had mixed feelings. On one hand, as a Nintendo Switch owner, I was excited that I would be privy to a game made solely for the Switch (and PC, but then, what game isn’t on PC?). While it didn’t seem like it would be as visually appealing as “Fighterz” (which is honestly the best looking “Dragon Ball” game on the market at the moment) it seemed as though it could still prove to be interesting. The trailer introduced us to a world wherein the heroes of “Dragon Ball” have become so popular that they have been turned into a card game - think “Boruto” ninja cards - and you’ll take on the role of someone who plays the game. It seemed something akin to Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon with elements of actual fighting - and I thought that it could be something worthwhile.
However, that all changed when I found footage of actual gameplay and, well.. this game looks pretty damn horrible. And, I mean that literally - it looks horrendous. I am not one to usually knock a game for having a rough presentation, but I have seen better graphics on PS2. Honestly, I really feel like “DB: Budokai 2” looks better than what I saw of “World Mission.” Aside from that, the gameplay seems pretty interesting - but not so interesting that I feel it warrants me paying $60.00 for it. The game board style of play is reminiscent of mobile games and, in all honesty, this seems more like an app than it does a fully fleshed out console game. However, only time will tell - I am definitely going to add it to my GameFly queue so I can try it out, but I honestly cannot see myself purchasing this one

“Dragon Ball: Project Z”
Now we get to the project we’re all pumped for, “Project Z,” - a brand new role playing game based within the canon “Dragon Ball” Universe. Not only is this game touting graphics that are on par with the beauty of “Fighterz” (have I already mentioned how beautiful that game is?) but it also has the added benefit of allowing us to relieve the story of “Dragon Ball” all over again. I know, to some, it might seem belabored - the concept of going through those all-too familiar battles again - but, it really has been a long time since the series has gone the route of allowing us to relieve our favorite epic battles the way they were meant to be seen. In fact, the last “Dragon Ball” game to follow the actual story was 2009’s “Dragon Ball: Raging Blast” and even that game took a number of liberties that changed the story depending on certain factors. So, its been at least a decade since we have had the opportunity to bask in Akira Toriyama’s incredible story through the medium of gaming.
What has me even more excited about “Project Z” is the fact that its being helmed by CyberConnect2 - the studio that helped develop the “Naruto: Ultimate Storm” series - and having experienced their work in the past, I feel that “Project Z” is in damn good hands. CC2 knows how to balance epic fighting with a memorable story mode. Even now, years after its release, I’ll still find myself watching the cinematic fight scenes from previous Storm games - as far back as 2010’s “Ultimate Ninja Storm 2.” There ability to adapt manga/anime is incredible, and I honestly cant think of a better company to take the reins for a game of this magnitude.
